Characteristics of memory impairment and related factors in patients with grand mal epilepsy following treatment at Hai Phong Psychiatric Hospital

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Describe the clinical characteristics of memory impairment in patients with grand mal epilepsy following treatment at Hai Phong Psychiatric Hospital and analyze some factors related to memory impairment in the above patient group. Research subjects: 151 patients diagnosed with grand mal epilepsy (G40.6) from 20 to 64 years old, under the community mental health care program managed by Hai Phong Psychiatric Hospital, monitored and treated at medical stations, in the period from September 2022 to September 2023. Results: The average MQ score of the entire research group was 89,24±12,13 points, of which 62/151 patients had MQ scores below average (less than 90 points), corresponding to the rate of patients with memory impairment of 41.05%, the most common symptoms is immediate memory impairment, followed by short-term memory impairment, and long-term memory impairment. Patients with an age of onset under 20 years old have a 3.24 times higher risk of memory impairment than patients with an age of onset ≥ 20 years old (p=0.0005). Patients with epilepsy for ≥ 20 years have a 2.8 times higher risk of memory impairment than those with epilepsy for < 20 years (p = 0.0006). The higher frequency of seizures, the higher risk of memory impairment (p < 0.001). Patients using Phenobarbital had a 2.96 times higher risk of memory impairment than patients not using Phenobarbital (p = 0.002).
