Plant characteristics - medical materials and anti-cancer effect of Chum Ngay leaf (Moringan oleifera L.)

Abstract

“Chùm ngây” (Moringa oleifera L.) is known to have many biological effects including anti-cancer, immune-enhancing, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-atherosclerotic, etc. [1 ]. The database of botanical, herb characteristics and the anti-cancer effect of Moringa oleifera leaves collected in Tien Lang, Hai Phong will be the premise for future studies. Fresh samples were collected for morphology and anatomical structure assessment. Medicinal powder and the anti-cancer effect of Moringa leaves were also surveyed and evaluated. The results showed that Moringa oleifera leaf extracts which had moderate activity in inhibiting the growth of the Jurkat cancer cells with IC50 values of methanol and ethanol extracts being 50.92 µM and 77.96 µM respectively at the extraction rate of 30g dry leaves/300ml solvent. Therefore, methanol extract showed more potential inhibition results.
