LIFE-CYCLE RITUALS OF THE CHAM MUSLIM PEOPLE IN AN GIANG: THE TREND TOWARD ISLAM RECONFIGURATION IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBAL INTEGRATION

Abstract

Field survey findings from Khanh Binh, Nhon Hoi, Vinh Hau, and Chau Phong communes in An Giang province indicate that the Cham Islam community is increasingly oriented towards restructuring their life cycle rituals in a more religious manner. This trend is evidenced by the gradual removal of folk elements that were traditionally intertwined in the rituals, while significantly enhancing religious components in accordance with Islamic teachings. This restructuring not only demonstrates the Cham community's commitment to preserving their ritual culture, but also highlights a cultural and religious strategy aimed at reinforcing national identity amid the ongoing waves of integration and social transformation.
