TRANSFORMATION OF THE OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURE IN VIETNAM DURING THE LAST TWO DECADES BY USING COHORT ANALYSIS OF HOUSEHOLD LIVING STANDARDS SURVEYS’ DATA
Abstract
Using Age-Period cohort analysis (APC) to organize and analyze the occupational structure of individuals aged 15 years and over based on the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey (VHLSS) from 1998 to 2018, the main findings show that: (1) Despite some positive signals, the process of employment restructuring still moved towards reducing the proportion in the agriculture - forestry - fishery sector and increasing the proportion in the industry – construction sector and trade - service sector in Vietnam is quite slow. (2) Differences in the age distribution (age effect) over time (time effect) along with the continuous increase in the average age of workers in all sectors reflect the “aging” trend of working age, especially in the agriculture - forestry - fishery sector, which may be preliminarily explained by the cohort effect when the decline in the employment rate in this sector is increasingly higher in recent generations.
