FOLK TALES IN THE MEKONG DELTA – A COMPOUND CULTURAL RESOURCE FOR REGIONAL EDUCATION
Abstract
Regional education is a compulsory subject in the new general education curriculum in 2018 to equip students with basic knowledge about culture, history, geography, economy, society, art...of the locality in order to foster the love for homeland, capacity and comprehensive qualities of citizens in the new social context. In the regional education program at the general education level, "Local folk tales" is designed throughout all levels, in order to expand and improve the reading comprehension ability of literatures for students; at the same time, it is also a unique means of educating regional culture. From this practice, on the basis of researching and analyzing folk tales in the Mekong Delta according to thematic systems, we clarify the indigenous cultural value of the system of folk tales in the Mekong River Delta, proposing to use them as a source of teaching materials for regional education in the direction of cultural integration for provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta.
