Abstract
In the nineteenth century, the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam experienced a variety of natural disasters, particularly floods. Floods occur frequently on a large scale, wreaking havoc in the Northern Delta, one of the country's two major rice granaries, causing numerous serious socioeconomic problems and having a minor impact on national security and defence.
