Abstract
Metatextuality, like intertextuality, is an important category of modern literary theory. The paper presents the author's views on the concept of metatextuality and its manifestations in different fields. In language, the paper presents the views of R. Jakobson and of A. Wierbicka, and, thereby, provides an overall definition: metatextuality is a component of a text, that explains and evaluates of the formation and characteristics of the main text. In the field of culture and literature, the author analyzes a number of phenomena of metatextuality in foreign and domestic drama, cinema and literature. In the field of culture, the paper analyzes metatexts in cinema. In literature, the paper points out the manifestations of metatextuality in classical literature; and, especially, delves into modern and postmodern literary metatexts.
