Abstract

During the period of 1963-1979, under the administration of President Park Chung-hee, South Korea achieved remarkable economic development, rapid social transformation, and expanded foreign relations. Many researchers around the world have regarded South Korea’s exceptional progress as the “Miracle on the Han River”, as it developed from one of the poorest countries in the world at the end of the Korean War to one of the leading developed countries within just fifty years. These achievements reflected changes in the policies, economic development strategies, and foreign relations pursued by the Park Chung-hee government. The objective of this article is to examine the factors that influenced the foreign policy of the Park Chung-hee government during this period on three levels: international and regional context (the systemic level), domestic context (the national level), and personal factor (the personal level).
