Abstract

Hát văn has its origin associated with the ritual of singing to praise the merits of the spirits belonging to the Vietnamese people worship of Mother Goddesses of Three Realms. During the ritual to serve the spirits, cung văn (or the performer) sits on a mat, singing and playing folk instruments as a means to bring the medium to the state of trance when they can communicate with the deities. In making a living, chầu văn performers have to constantly improve their artistic skills in order to attract the spirit mediums - their customers, as a result, the worship of the Mother Goddess of the Three Realms is always supplemented with new elements, but about spiritually this is deemed as sensive. Through field research, observation and in-depth interviews with several chầu văn artisans in Nam Định province, the article analyzes and evaluates the situation of singing folk performances in the worship of Mother Goddess of the Three Realms in the current context. It proposes some solutions to better preserve and promote the value of the practice of worship the Mother Goddess of the Three Realms of the Vietnamese people in Nam Định.
