Abstract

Since the second half of the 19th century, in Asia appeared trends of learning from developed countries in the West and Japan. China and Vietnam were in the same historical context, with the wish to avoid the threats of foreign invasion and move towards being strong countries. In China, at the end of the 19th century, the Yangwu movement initiated by Li Hongzhang and Tseng Kuo-fan attracted a lot of attention and left many valuable lessons in the then modern-style education. In Vietnam in the early 20th century, the Đông Du movement initiated by Phan Bội Châu also reaped a number of achievements despite being short-lived.Taking place in two different contexts, the two movements shared many similarities, showing that the new educational factors had had profound influence on the historical processes of the two countries from the later half of the 19th to the early 20th centuries.
