Abstract
The Lý-Trần period was the period of highest development in the history of Vietnamese Buddhism in the feudal era. That was a period when Buddhism profoundly influenced many areas of the Đại Việt (Great Viet) nation and its people’s life, playing a great and especially important role in the construction and development of the country, and in the struggle to protect national independence. In this article, utilizing historical documents, the authors analyze and clarify the role of Buddhism in the formation and implementation of the policy of “Protecting and Pacifying People” with outstanding manifestations such as those in creating and strengthening the state apparatus of people; in the education of ethics for and in the non-material life of the people; in taking care of their material lives; and in protecting their lives and securing a peaceful life for them.
