Abstract
Throughout the history of Vietnam, cottage industry in villages in the Tonkin Delta had been almost unchanged, but from the beginning of the 20th century, it advanced compared to the previous period. First of all, in order to survive and develop, some handicrafts such as silk weaving, cotton weaving, embroidery, tailoring, etc… had to improve their techniques and designs. Secondly, some new crafts were born or adapted such as lace, fireworks, porcelain, rattan weaving... Thirdly, vocational schools started to establish in the Tonkin provinces. The studying of the transformation of cottage industry in the villages in the Tonkin Delta from the early 20th century to 1945 is the scientific basis to inherit the positive and reasonable aspects, and overcomes limitations and negatives to carry out the industrialization and modernization process of the agriculture and rural areas at present.
