Abstract

The Vietnam - Laos border areas are inhabited by several ethnic groups who play a critical role in socio-economic development and national sovereignty protection. Their livelihood activities are considered factors affecting people's lives and political stability in border areas, however, they are not well studied. Based on the ethnographic fieldwork data collecting in 2023, this article examines the economic activities of the Bru - Vân Kiều and what factors affect to these activities. The results show that the Bru - Vân Kiều has diversified their economic activities in order to increase their earning and living conditions. However, due to the impact of natural disasters, lack of infrastructure or incomplete policies on forest land management, the economic activities of the Bru - Vân Kiều ethnic group are not really sustainable.
