Abstract

This article reviews a number of accessible international studies on ethnic relations in China’s border areas, focusing on three main contents. The first part presents an overview of ethnicity and the ethnic situation in China’s border areas. The second part shows some specific, outstanding and urgent issues concerning ethnic relations in those areas according to international studies, revolving around five main axes of relations: intra-ethnic relations, cross-border ethnic relations, relations between ethnic minorities and the ethnic majority group, relations among ethnic minorities, and relations between ethnic groups and the nation-state. The third part points out China’s policies regulating ethnic relations and their results and limitations.
