Abstract

Michel Serres (1930-2019) is a highly influential contemporary French philosopher. Serres provides a perspective on the history of the definition of objects in his ontology. He believes that objects have been devalued, and they must depend on subjects. Based on that, he proposes an ontology that raises the object and erases the distinction between the two. Serres puts forth his idea of ecology based on this object-centered viewpoint: Human must uphold the natural world, declare it to be the subject of law, put a stop to the nature-dependent lifestyles, and start a symbiotic lifestyle with nature. Through studying works of Serres, the article clarifies key ideas, indicates the relationship between Serres’s ontology and ecological thought, highlights the benefits and drawbacks of Serres’s philosophy, and likewise raises some suggestions for Vietnam.
