Abstract
In the context of the complicated territorial disputes in the Biển Đông (the East Sea, also known as the South China Sea), the exercise of actual sovereignty over the sea receives special attention of the Communist Party, the State and the whole people of Vietnam. Accordingly, fishing activities are considered one of the most important methods of exercising sovereignty. In Central region of Vietnam which has the largest seafood of the country, fishing is one of traditional profession, ensuring livelihoods for coastal communities. More important, the presence of Vietnamese boats from the Central region in traditional fishing grounds show clear evidences of Vietnam’s sovereignty over the sea. Based on historical approach, the paper will focus on analyzing the current situation of the fishing activities in Central Vietnam. Simultaneously, comments on the role of these activities in the protection of sea and island sovereignty in Vietnam are drawn.
