Abstract

Along with the economic development and ruling policies of the Vietnam’s feudal dynasties, the cities of Vietnam in history (such as Thăng Long - Kẻ Chợ, Phố Hiến, Hội An, etc.) had a flourish, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. The trading process and dense population with a variety of sectors in urban areas created numerous problems in managing the import and export of goods at commercial ports, foreign trading posts, transportation within the royal citadel and citizens’ residence. Therefore, the guarantee of security and order in urban areas had been set. The article focuses on the state regulations and two medieval laws through which to understand how Vietnamese ancestors maintained urban security and order in history and draw some lessons for the maintenance of urban security and order today.
