Abstract

The Cơ-tu people are an ethnic group that has lived in the Vietnam-Laos border area in Quảng Nam province for a long time, where they make up the majority of the population. In this region, the Cơ-tu still practice their traditional livelihood activities, including slash-and-burn agriculture and natural resource exploitation. In addition, they also engage in supplementary economic activities such as livestock farming, artisan production, and some new forms of livelihood. Despite these efforts, the Cơ-tu people continue to experience low standard of living, and poverty remains widespread. Drawing on the results of questionnaires and ethnographic fieldwork conducted from 2023 to 2024, this article examines some of the livelihood activities and the living standards of the Cơ-tu people in this border area. The goal is to provide data on their livelihoods which can serve as a reference for further research on the Cơ-tu people and developing economic development policies for the border regions of Quảng Nam province.
