The status of air environment management in Cao Son coal mine area
Abstract
Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company - Vinacomin is an open-pit coal mining unit of Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited – Vinacomin, utilizing modern exploitation, advanced mining technology, and meeting regional standards. Open-pit coal mining activities using drilling, blasting, earth and rock excavation, transportation, etc, have also caused certain impacts on the regional air environment. The survey and assessment results show that the air quality in the region varies seasonally, often increasing in the dry season. Dust concentrations vary between monitoring locations, with high concentrations in the mining area and Bang Nau dumping area, and lowest in the 4-story office area and residential area of Duong Huy commune. In particular, the suspended dust content in the mining area ranges from 243 µg/Nm3 to 299 µg/Nm3 and is lower than the permissible limit according to QCVN 05:2023/BTNMT (TB 1h). The synthesis results also show that the concentration of suspended dust has increased over time because of the increasing capacity and expansion of mining activities in the past year. These results show that Cao Son Coal Company has been implementing solutions to mining technology and environmental treatment to control the air quality in the area. On that basis, the study also proposes a comprehensive management solution to improve the effectiveness of air environment protection in the Cao Son coal mine area, aiming to ensure stable production and sustainable socio-economic development for the locality.
