Community opinion in the protection of water quality of Bung Binh Thien Lake, An Giang province
Abstract
Bung Binh Thien (BBT) is approved as a Wetland Conservation Area in An Phu district, An Giang province. However, the water quality in the BBT reservoir is declining including pollution parameters DO, TSS, BOD5, COD, and Coliforms. The results of resident interviews within the BTT Lake area indicated that the majority of people said that Bung quality water was polluted, and some said it was very polluted. The characteristic indication helps to identify the polluted water quality is the change of water color, the death of aquatic animals (fish, shrimp, crabs, ...) on the waterface, turbid or black watercolor, when flood water enters the BBT it will pull part of the outside garbage in causing water environmental pollution, untreated domestic wastewater from people and water for washing cows living near the protected area. Along with that, the current status of fish farming on BBT has no methodology to treat wastewater as well as control excess food, this is also the cause of surface water pollution. In addition, when the flood water recedes, along with the discharge of wastewater from Sa To sluice (for agriculture in Khanh Binh commune), it will lead to residues of pesticides and fertilizers being carried into the BBT.
