DEVELOPING THE VIETNAMESE CUSTARD-APPLE VALUE CHAIN IN NEW RURAL CONSTRUCTION (CASE STUDY ON KHMER ETHNIC HOUSEHOLDS IN VINH CHAU TOWN, SOC TRANG PROVINCE)
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to analyze the current situation of
production and consumption of Vietnamese custard-apple in Vinh
Chau town, Soc Trang province, based on a survey of market
actors including producers, traders, local and external retailers.
The analysis results on the current production situation show that
the Khmer custard-apple growing households have more than
20 years of farming experience, but the ability to receive and
apply science and technology is very limited. This results in low
productivity and quality. The limited quality and output also makes
most of the products sold separately through local collectors or
traders. In general, the production efficiency of custard apple in
current Khmer households is quite low compared to some other
crops such as longan, mango and vegetables. Therefore, programs
and activities to transfer production techniques, change varieties,
and apply organic fertilizers to soil improvement will be expected
to contribute significantly to improving productivity and quality.
custard apple in the future.
