Arguments of Vietnamese fiction in Chinese characters:
Issues of legendary fiction
Our article presents the criteria for interpreting legendary fictions in medieval Vietnam on the basis of that Vietnamese legendary fiction is considered as an integral part of the genre of legendary fictions and narrative prose in Chinese characters in medieval cultural East Asia area. In which we propose two basic elements: the phenomenon of the “legendary” and literalization in terms of “the penmanship”. We consider that the “legendary” is not an endemic element of a legendary novel, not just “a myth” and “a trange” either but also different from the “legendary itself”. In terms of penmanship, the article defines the most basic characteristic of the legendary manner “legendary penmanship” is the “literalization of ancient biography”. The establishment of the above two factors is the basis for distinguishing the genre of legendary fictions in medieval Vietnam from other relative genres, especially the genre of notes.
