Establishing and managing a geographical indication
for CAJEPUT essential oil product of Thừa Thiên Huế Province
In order to protect and preserve the geographical origin, reputation and specific characteristics of Huế cajeput oil, to enhance the comparative advantage for specialty products of Huế cajeput oil in the context of globalization and international integration, Department of Science and Technology of Thừa Thiên Huế Province has implemented the project “Establishing and managing a geographical indications for Huế cajuput oil products of Thừa Thiên Huế Province”. After carefully examining the conditions for protection of geographical indications, on December 3, 2020, the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam issued a certificate of protection of geographical indications “Huế” for the Thừa Thiên Huế Province’s cajeput essential oil products.
After 18 months of implementation, the project has completed all 11 products and activities proposed by the project. It has completed the protection of geographical indication “Huế” for cajeput oil products, this is a favorable opportunity to promote competitive advantages to increase economic value for people and businesses participating in the chain value of cajuput oil products in Thừa Thiên Huế Province. In addition, to economic efficiency, the project‘s products both promote the cultural value of traditional occupations and create jobs for idle laborers in the countryside. The project‘s products also contribute brand management tools which are a geographical indications associated with local technical standards in the production and trading of cajeput oil, it’s effectively guaranted by quality standards to serve consumers, this is also a solution to limit poor-quality production activities that affect the reputation and competitiveness of local key products, which are very famous such as Huế cajeput oil.
The project recommends in the future, it is necessary to strengthen communication solutions, brand promotion, as well as technology application to make Huế cajeput oil products become the national key product of medicinal herbs.
