Abstract
In Vietnamese, adverbials are peripheral sentence constituents but represent a structurally and functionally complex category. The lack of consensus among linguists regarding their definition and classification presents challenges for their instruction in schools. This study investigates the treatment of adverbials in three current Vietnamese language textbook series for lower secondary education - Cánh Diều (Kite), Kết nối tri thức với cuộc sống (Connecting Knowledge with Life), and Chân trời sáng tạo (Creative Horizons) - and analyzes inconsistencies across these materials. The findings aim to inform more effective pedagogical approaches for teaching adverbials in particular and Vietnamese grammar in general.
