Applying appraisal theory in analyzing dialogues in For whom the bell tolls by Ernest Hemingway
Abstract
Character language is an essential element in narrative texts, reflecting the character's personality and convey the author's ideological message. This paper applies the Appraisal Theory by Martin & White (2005), specifically the Attitude system, to analyze character dialogues in the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway. The study aims to clarify how characters express emotions, make ethical judgments, and evaluate events. The analysis reveals three main themes reflected in dialogues: the characters' enthusiasm for the Republican ideal, the conflict between ideology and morality, and the disillusionment with the value of war.
