Formal approach and semantic approach in linguistics
Keywords:
form, linguistic structure, meaning, functions of language
Abstract
The form-centered paradigm in linguistics focuses on the formal relationships between linguistic units rather than their meanings. Two examples of form-centered approaches are structural linguistics and generative linguistics. Structural linguistics focuses on establishing these formal relationships independent of meaning, while generative linguistics studies well-formed structures and establishes general grammatical rules. In contrast, approaches that oppose formalism prioritize meaning as the center of study. The functional approach, known as functional linguistics, examines the role of language in social contexts, while cognitive linguistics studies how cognitive processes impact linguistic structures.
