Applying Chatbot messenger to improve the effectiveness in using the formal and informal forms in Japanese speaking skills

Abstract

This study focused on the application of an artificial intelligence Chatbot Messenger to fix the learners’ confusion between formal and informal forms in Japanese speaking practice. The results obtained from the experiment and the survey of learners before and after the experiment showed that the confusion between the casual and polite forms in Japanese speaking skills of learners is quite common. Next, the Chatbot Messenger application showed positive effects on reducing the confusion rate between the formal and informal forms in learners' speaking skills, and received positive feedback from learners regarding the effectiveness in developing awareness of how to identify communication partners and contexts in order to use appropriate language forms in Japanese communication.
