The linguistic landscape in Hanoi’s Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake: Current trends and shifts

Abstract

The term linguistic landscape was only formally used in linguistic studies in the 1990s by pioneers in the field such as Backhaus, Landry and Bourhis. Studies in this field have mainly focused on public signs, official signs and private shop signs. Major cities around the world have served as sites for various studies. This article examines the linguistic landscape features of the Hoan Kiem tourist area and the Old Quarter of Hanoi, highlighting language shift on signs appearing in public places.
