Abstract
Vietnamese syllables are a combination of segmental elements: an onset, a rime, in which comprising medials, vowels, and codas, together with a suprasegmental elements: tones. The timbre of a syllable is determined by the timbre of its constituent elements, in which the timbre of the main vowel, which functions to form the syllabic peak, plays a decisive role. When considering the frequency range of a syllable, one must base on the frequency ranges of the combined elements within the syllable such as tones, onsets, rimes, so which element is the most decisive in creating the timbre of the syllable? Below we examine, in turn, the roles of tones, onsets, and rimes in shaping the timbre of the syllable.
