Factors Influencing Politeness Strategies in the Speech Act of Complaining

Abstract

Complaining is a popular speech act that we often encounter in social life, however, this complain speech acts is quite threatening to the face of the participants in the communication. Therefore, politeness is also considered a necessary strategy to establish or maintain a harmonious relationship in communication between the speaker and the listener. This article research and analysis three important factors that have a great influence on the selection and use of politeness strategies in the speech act of complaining. These are: relative power, social distance and imposition rank.
