Abstract
Listening comprehension remains a core challenge in learning Vietnamese, a tonal language with complex vowel clusters. Drawing on over 20 years of teaching experience, the author develops pronunciation-focused listening materials for elementary learners, addressing gaps that classroom time alone cannot fill. Based on a four-year pilot in the First-Year Vietnamese Course at Columbia University, the study tracks students’ pronunciation and listening gains into the second year. Findings highlight the value of integrating pronunciation training with listening instruction to enhance proficiency and support self-directed learning, offering a holistic model for modern Vietnamese language education.
