THE NOVEL LANH LUNG BY NHAT LINH FROM A SEMIOTIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

This article applies semiotic theory to decode several key symbols in Lanh lung by Nhat Linh, focusing specifically on the motifs of “Tiet hanh kha phong” (Virtuous Woman), moonlight, and light-darkness. By analyzing the relationship between the signifier and the signified of these symbols, the study elucidates Nhat Linh’s artistic ingenuity in constructing a system of signs imbued with profound ideological and cultural meanings. Moreover, the semiotic approach highlights the multiplicity of interpretations and the dynamic interaction between text and reader. The findings not only introduce a new and appropriate perspective for approaching Lanh lung, but also affirm the applicability and interpretive potential of semiotics in exploring the deeper layers of meaning in Vietnamese literary works
