The image of the soldier in the husbandless wharf: from the original novel to a movie
Abstract
When publishing The husbandless wharf in 1990, writer Duong Huong did not expect that it would touch the deepest sadness, truly reflecting the gray areas of the soldier's fate in the post-war period. Sympathizing with him, director Luu Trong Ninh twice adapted it into a film, but the film version The husbandless wharf (2000) was still considered successful, sticking closer to the original literary work. Applying the research direction of inter-semiotic translation and the method of analysis and comparison to study The husbandless wharf, the article finds similarities and differences in the adaptation process between the original literary work and the film, recreating the image of the soldier. That is also the basis for evaluating creative ability or limitations; explaining the possibility of cinematic language when adapting literary language, explaining the appeal of visual art over verbal art that only focuses on stimulating imagination.
