Demythologozing the myth of the “American dream” in the works of Vietnamese – American immigrant writers

Abstract

From a popular myth of the “American Dream”, with the belief that America offers everyone the opportunity to have a good and successful life, the article examines some works by 1.5 generation Vietnamese American immigrant writers such as Viet Thanh Nguyen, Angie Chau, from which we can see other voices, critical, demystifying the concept of the “American Dream” from the perspective of insiders. The article argues that these realistic, demystifying pictures of immigrant life represent an effort to resist the discourse of the mainstream media in order to expose the insecurities of current American society.
