The Character Type of “Số Đỏ” in the Novel “The Career Path of Nikodem Dyzma” by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz and “Số Đỏ” by Vu Trong Phung

Abstract

The “dumb luck” character type in literature often captivates readers not only because of the random, “heaven-sent” fortunes of these characters but also due to the brilliant satirical and ironic narrative techniques employed by authors in depicting them. Characters who achieve success through talent and personal effort are rare; instead, “dumb luck” characters thrive through cunning, opportunism, manipulation, and substantial “assistance” from external, antagonistic societal forces. Using comparative theory, this article provides insights into the “dumb luck” character type through an analysis of two works from different literary traditions - Tadeusz Dolega-Mostowicz's The Career of Nikodem Dyzma and Vu Trong Phung's DumbLuck.
