Doing research on the policies and society of the marine and island areas in the Southern Central: Some theoretical and realistic issues

Abstract

For Vietnam in general and the Southern  Central in particular, little attention has been paid to the research on the policies and society of the marine and island areas, although Vietnam's maritime strategy, established in 2007 identified “reaching out to the sea, exploiting and protecting the sea ​​is the nation’s most vital choice.”

Doing research on the policies and society of the marine and island area in the Southern Central is to approach the process of building and implementing the socio-development and management policies in the island waters regarding all the aspects of politics, economy, society, culture, security, and national defence ... On that foundation, we can assess the achievements and limitations of such policies, as well as the social benefits of Vietnam’s coastal Southern Central region, summarizing the acquired lessons and proposing some solutions for the socio-development and management of this marine ​​region during the industrialization – modernization period, aiming at protecting the marine sovereignty of Vietnam..
