Reproductive biology of Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, 1758 in O Loan lagoon, Phu Yen province

Abstract

        Mugil cephalus is one of the commercial species of O Loan lagoon, but studies on its biology are very limited. This paper provides preliminary data on the reproductive biology of this fish: the gender structure of fish population, the genital cell and sexual gonad development of the fish based on studying histology methods, the results indicated that the egg and perm development experiences stages corresponding to sexual products development of the other bone-fishes. The fish ís able to reproduce in the lagoon conditions at 2+ age and breed many times in its life. Absolute and relative reproductiveness of the fish varies from 19,605 to 100,840 eggs and from 385.1 to 882.9 eggs relatively. The eggs of this fish have their mean diameter of 368 µm.
