Abstract

In the context of Vietnam facing increasing pressure from extreme weather events and rapid urbanization, rooftop space should be reconsidered as an underutilized infrastructural resource for urban stormwater management. Although green roof systems have been extensively studied worldwide, their hydrological performance remains limited when applied in tropical climates characterized by high‐intensity, short‐duration rainfall and pronounced seasonal variability, as observed in Vietnam. Accordingly, this study proposes an adaptive Smart Blue - Green Roof model for Hanoi (SBGR - VN). The system is designed to maintain effective stormwater retention capacity under extreme rainfall events while ensuring biological stability of rooftop vegetation during prolonged dry periods. When implemented at an appropriate scale, SBGR - VN can contribute to microclimate regulation, alleviate pressure on urban drainage systems, and support the sustainable development of the capital city.
