THE HANDLING OF COHESION IN JOURNALISM TRANSLATION BY STUDENTS AT THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT IN HO CHI MINH CITY UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION

  • Nguyễn Thanh Tùng

Abstract

This article investigates how students of translation and interpretation major deal with textual cohesion in their translation. Theory of textual cohesion is adopted from Halliday (1976) and Tran Ngoc Them (1985). Data were collected from a set of 4 texts for journalism translated by 36 juniors of the English Department in the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. The findings of the study indicate that the students encounter considerable problems in dealing with textual cohesion in their translation, of which the greatest difficulty is ellipsis, followed by conjunction and then reference. Encountering these problems, they usually have recourse to the norms of the source language.
