Waste in the Construction of Industrial Facilities in Northern Provinces: Contributing Factors and Solutions
Abstract
In recent years, the rapid expansion of industrial factory construction projects has significantly
increased construction demand, placing considerable pressure on contractors and making effective
construction management a critical factor in enhancing the competitiveness of enterprises. However, the
construction process still exhibits various forms of waste, which generate negative impacts on project
cost, schedule, and quality. Therefore, identifying the underlying causes of waste is essential for proposing
solutions that contribute to improving construction management performance. This study employs the
Relative Importance Index (RII) method to analyze the factors contributing to waste in the construction of
industrial factories in several northern provinces of Vietnam. The findings reveal six primary factors leading
to waste: inappropriate or frequently altered designs; poor material management; construction errors and
rework; inaccurate specifications or quantities in material orders; imprecise cost estimation; and ineffective
construction supervision. These factors provide an important foundation for proposing solutions to control,
limit, and minimize waste during the construction of industrial factories.
