Cross-laminated timber (CLT) in modern construction: Material basis, manufacturing technologies and applications

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in modern construction, focusing on the material basis, manufacturing technologies, and practical applications. The paper clarifies the relationship between the cross-layered structure of CLT, the properties of the base wood and adhesive systems, and the fabrication and quality control processes, as well as the mechanical and geometric characteristics of CLT panels. Based on a synthesis of key references and representative studies, the paper discusses the role of CLT in load-bearing panel systems, prefabricated construction, and multi-story buildings, highlighting the advantages of modular fabrication, material-use efficiency, and the potential for scaling up applications, while also considering environmental aspects such as the efficient use of timber resources and the contribution of CLT systems to sustainable construction.
