Topology optimization of structure using a periodic unit cell

Abstract
The paper presents a topology optimization model for structures composed of periodically repeated unit cells. The optimization approach employed is the isotropic penalization method (SIMP). The model is applied to a two-dimensional simply supported beam subjected to a concentrated load at midspan. Four simulation cases are considered, including one non-periodic optimization case and three cases in which the beam is optimized using four unit cells arranged in different configurations. The results show that the non-periodic optimized structure achieves the highest stiffness. Additionally, the orientation of the unit cells leads to different stiffness performances.
