Urbanisation and Agricultural Transformation in a Peri-urban Village in Hanoi
Abstract
Urbanisation and agriculture is a global topic that interest several disciplines, such as economics, human geography, and urban studies. Research on urbanisation in developing countries shows that although peri-urban agriculture has declined sharply due to the expansion of urban areas and has become fragmented, it still makes a certain contribution to providing food and greenery for the urban area and is the livelihood of a part of the region's residents. Therefore, more research is needed focusing on the dynamics of agricultural livelihoods in peri-urban areas. Based on field research recently conducted in La Tinh village, Dong La commune, Hoai Duc district, Hanoi city, this article explores the impact of urbanisation on agricultural production, examining trends of changes as well as the role of agriculture for residents in the community; thereby contributing to the discussion about urban agriculture and farmers.
