Interethnic Marriage of Giay People in Ban Qua Commune, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province

Abstract

Inter-ethnic marriages among the Giay people is a historical phenomenon which represents a change in the traditional conception of ethnic minorities and poses several problems for current social development. Based on the analysis of tradition to the current status of Giay people’s marriages in Ban Qua commune, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province, the article shows the change in awareness of the principle of co-ethnic and arranged marriages to inter-ethnic ones conducted based on love. From there, some issues are raised, and solutions are proposed for developing policies to preserve and promote ethnic culture and cohesion in the current context of industrialisation and modernisation.
