Abstract

This research, conducted in two Thai communities in Phu Yen and Moc Chau districts of Son La province, shows that climate changes have affected the quality of life and livelihood activities of the ethnic people. These effects are presented in the declining rate of environmental quality; unstable yield of crops and livestock; the increase of investment costs for production, etc. With traditional experiences and folk knowledge, Thai communities have appropriate coping methods such as restructuring crops and livestock; technical change; diversification of occupations. However, their livelihood and life activities still face many challenges. The article analyzes the impacts of climate change on livelihood activities, daily life, as well as the experiences of the Thai communities in responding to climate changes to reduce risks and damage to households’ economy; from there, some recommendations are made to improve the capacity of Thai people to cope with climate change.
