Abstract

Unlike the Khmer in the Southwestern provinces, the Khmer in An Giang live in mountainous areas with complex terrain along the border with Cambodia. During the Southwest Border war, their hamlets/villages and temples were seriously damaged, most of the people had to migrate to the provinces of Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Can Tho…; a section of them had to migrate to Cambodia. After the Khmer Rouge were driven out of Vietnam, the Khmer in An Giang returned home empty handed and had to rebuild their lives from scratch. While this situation not only required the people’s effort to restore the economy and society, it was also a "burden" to the local government in An Giang province. The article mentions the role of local government in implementing the socio-economic development Party and State’s policies for Khmer people in An Giang province.
