Abstract

Buddhism came to Vietnam at the beginning of the Common Era; it then had an important influence on the formation of cultural identities of many ethnic groups as well as making a great contribution to the cause of national construction and defense. The introduction of Buddhism into Vietnam in general has been mentioned in many studies, while the introduction of Buddhism into ethnic minority areas has not been given due attention. This article outlines the introduction of Buddhism into ethnic minority areas in three regions (the Northern mountainous region, the Central Highlands and the Southwestern region) based on an overview of research works from 1986 to now, thereby suggesting a new research direction for the above mentioned issue.
