International Non-Government Organizations and the promotion of gender equality for ethnic minority groups in Vietnam
Abstract
Gender inequality amongst ethnic minority groups, between ethnic minority groups and the Kinh people and exists noticeably in Vietnam. Many aspects of social life - such as communication, behaviors, and other aspects of socio-economic life- display gender inequality. Therefore, gender equality, which has been one of the top priorities of international non-government organizations (INGOs), needs to be tackled by funding current projects in Vietnam. This article discusses the roles of INGOs in promoting gender equality in rights, social status, women’s roles in economic development, education, and health care for ethnic minority groups. By assessing achievements and shortcomings of INGOs in Vietnam, the author presents some recommendations and solutions to improve the effectiveness of INGOs in implementing projects related to gender inequality among ethnic minority and mountainous regions in Vietnam in the near future.
