The birth and child-rearing rituals of the Muong people in Cam Luong commune, Cam Thuy district, Thanh Hoa province

Abstract

This article examines the birth and child-rearing rituals of the Muong people in Cam Luong commune, Cam Thuy district, Thanh Hoa province, and the changes in the contemporary context. It analyzes the following aspects of rituals and changes: the perceptions, taboos, and rites. The findings of this research show that the Muong people in Cam Luong commune have a better awareness of the health care for women. They also have gained new knowledge and begun new practices of child and maternal care. This article therefore recommends some solutions for preserving and promoting the birth and child rearing rituals as the cultural heritage of the Muong people.
