Abstract

The meaning of banana trees and leaves in ritual ceremonies at Hinduism temples (Ethnography of Sri-Mariaman Temple- Singapore). Sri Mariamman temple plays an important role in religious practices, and community cohesion for Singaporeans of South Indian origin. The presence of banana trees, bunches and leaves is noticeable in the cultural festive space at the temple. Banana trees were domesticated and planted in many countries in Southeast Asia. Using a cross-cultural comparison and the theory of cultural ecology, this article explores the meaning of bananas in ritual ceremonies at the Hindu temple - the Sri Mariamman in Singapore. At the same time, it reveals the meaning of bananas in Southeast Asian culture, which has Indian cultural traits and notes how India and Southeast Asia share the tropical monsoon socio-cultural space.
